How does CDFW develop their fishery population estimates?

The stock assessment processes used for various fisheries are extremely species-specific and there is not a single workflow that applies across all species. We recommend that you review the following resources, which provide information on individual species and species groups: 

For state-managed species, see our Marine Species Portal and filter for species with Enhanced Status Reports (ESRs). Those reports contain details about the population status for each species and the methods used to determine population size. 

For species managed cooperatively with the federal government, see the NOAA Fisheries website for West Coast Region Stock Assessments and review the information for Highly Migratory Species, Coastal Pelagic Species, Groundfish, and Salmon.
