Ask Marine - Frequently Asked Questions

How can I know if the fish I catch are fish safe to eat throughout the year?

public health, toxins, consumption, food safety, mercury

The California Department of Public Health collects and analyzes all of the safety information related to eating finfish and shellfish taken from state waters. CDFW posts this information along with any necessary fishery closures on our Health Advisories and Closures for California Finfish, Shellfish and Crustaceans web page. Information regarding recommended servings per week based on mercury levels for various species of fish can be found on OEHHA's Fish Advisories web page or in the most recent Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations booklet (PDF).
