What is the significance of the different colors on a map that shows California's marine protected areas?

designations, colors, map

Marine protected areas are different colors on CDFW maps. The colors are standardized for all designated areas and can help identify and understand differences in regulations quickly.

Marine protected area map color meanings:

  • Red or purple: The area does not allow any type of commercial or recreational fishing or take.
  • Green and blue: The area has specific regulations for what type of fishing or take is allowed in the area.
  • Pink: The area is closed to prevent disturbing birds and marine mammals. In most cases, people cannot enter these areas. Special closures, which are pink on maps, are the only areas associated with the statewide Marine Protected Area Network where access is prohibited.
