The idea of 30x30 started in 2019 when this scientific paper was published. In an effort to preserve our biodiverse world, the discussion about conserving 30 percent of undeveloped land and ocean on a worldwide scale led to the creation of the 2020 Paris Agreement. Shortly after the 2020 Paris Agreement meeting, in May 2020, the European Commission proposed the 30x30 initiative within the European Union. Following this, Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-82-20 in October 2020 to protect California’s biodiversity and accelerate the use of nature-based solutions in the fight against climate change.
