Ask Marine - Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of license is needed if I wanted to catch fish from shore and sell to individuals? Do I need to have a separate license to sell fish to a seafood store or restaurant?

sport caught fish sale, commercial license, fish business, FGC Section 7121

The law prohibits fish caught under the authority of a sport fishing license to be bought, sold, traded or bartered (Fish and Game Code, Section 7121). You can read about how to run a commercial fish business in this CDFW guide.

  • To sell commercially caught fish, you will need a Fish Business License.
  • The Fisherman’s Retail License only allows a commercial fisherman to sell their catch to the penultimate consumer (individual people). This license is only issued to an individual and cannot be used by a business, partnership, or husband and wife.
  • If you are planning to sell to businesses or restaurants, then you will need to purchase the Fish Receiver’s License.

All fish caught under the authority of a commercial fishing license, even for personal use, must be landed and documented on an electronic fish ticket and submitted to E-Tix. Commercial fishermen must locate a licensed fish business willing to purchase their catch or they must possess a Fisherman’s Retail License to report their commercial fish landings through the E-Tix portal. You can find additional information about commercial fishing on the CDFW website.
