The launch of the California Wolf Project within UC Berkeley’s Rausser College of Natural Resources establishes a long-term partnership with CDFW to advance the science and management of gray wolves in California.

As part of its evaluation of the Wolf-Livestock Compensation Pilot Program, CDFW today is posting outstanding wolf depredation reports dating back to August 2023. The depredation reports confirm 16 wolf depredations totaling a loss of 18 livestock. With this posting, CDFW can now finalize review of existing program applications and eligibility of livestock producers to receive payments for direct losses.

The wolf pack discovered this summer in Tulare County will now be called the Yowlumni Pack. The pack was found in the Sequoia National Forest in proximity to the Tule River Tribe of California’s reservation and ancestral lands. CDFW is honored to partner with the Tribe on formally naming the pack.

California has a new gray wolf pack in Tulare County. This is the Golden State’s southernmost pack and it is at least 200 air miles from the nearest known pack in northeastern California.
