LOCATION: Castro Cove, near Richmond, Contra Costa County DATE: Chronic releases in the past. INCIDENT SUMMARY: Intertidal and sub-tidal mudflats are contaminated with oil and mercury from historical discharges of wastewater and stormwater runoff from the Chevron Refinery into the adjacent marsh and cove. RESPONSIBLE PARTY: Chevron NATURAL RESOURCE TRUSTEES: California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. RESOURCES IMPACTED: Intertidal and subtidal mudflat and associated biota (invertebrates, shorebirds, fish). SETTLEMENT DETAILS: The Trustees settled the NRDA portion of the case for $2.85 million to fund marsh restoration projects in the northern portion of San Francisco Bay. STATUS OF RESTORATION: Restoration projects are complete.
