Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance

Deer and elk are at risk for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which was first detected in California in 2024. CDFW is looking for tribal partners who would be interested in starting programs to monitor for CWD on their lands or setting up outreach and education programs with tribal members. CDFW can provide CWD sampling kits, sampling training, free testing, and technical support for these programs free of cost.

If you would be interested in participating or learning more, reach out to Julia Sizek, Julia.Sizek@wildlife.ca.gov.

For more information about CWD, see our CDFW Chronic Wasting Disease page or our Tribal Partnership for CWD handout (PDF) .
