Ask Marine - Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use sand crabs as bait, and if yes how many can I take, and what can I use as a device to capture them?

sand crabs, mole crabs, sand fleas, CCR T14, sections 29.85(d) and 29.80(h)

Yes, you can use sand crabs (Emerita analoga) as bait. The current limit is 50 sand crabs per day and in possession, and they can be taken using the following hand-operated devices: spades, shovels, hoes, forks, rakes, devices that use suction commonly known as slurp guns or clam guns, and rigid pipes used to prevent the collapse of holes when digging.
