Following three consecutive years of closure, salmon fishing will return to the Klamath River Basin and Sacramento River for the upcoming summer and fall seasons.

Responding to angler interest in more close-to-home, warmwater fishing opportunities, CDFW has stocked smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass into the park pond at Gibson Ranch in Sacramento County.

Significant improvements in key California salmon populations — specifically Sacramento River fall-run Chinook and Klamath River fall-run Chinook — will allow for more ocean salmon fishing opportunities this year.

CDFW Director Meghan Hertel has assessed entanglement risk under the Risk Assessment Mitigation Program and announced changes to both commercial and recreational Dungeness crab fisheries in Fishing Zones 4 and 5.

After delays due to entanglement risk, crab meat quality issues, and elevated levels of domoic acid, the commercial Dungeness crab fishery will open in portions of northern California on January 15 under a 15% gear reduction. The commercial fishery will open in the following areas at 12:01 a.m., January 15 preceded by a 64-hour gear setting period beginning at 8:01 a.m. on January 12.
