For Out of State Hunters and Anglers
There is an update for reporting a successful hunt via the Declaration of Importation of Dead Fish and Wildlife Form (DFW 901) in accordance with Section 2353 of the Fish and Game Code and Section 712.5, Title 14, California Code of Regulations:
It shall be unlawful to import any dead birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, or amphibians into this state, or to possess the same, unless accompanied by a completed form DFW 901. A copy of the declaration may be submitted to the department by mail or online prior to or at the time of entry as described on the form. This section does not apply to dead animals imported into this state in a shipment handled by a common carrier under a bill of lading.
Situations by which this form would be used include dead wildlife imported into California from out of state (including out of the country in accordance with that country’s export requirements):
- Legally hunted or fished for personal consumption;
- Legally taken for trophy or taxidermy;
- Legally taken specimens for scientific or other research, notwithstanding other laws for their possession and/or importation;
- and Other legal uses.
Declaration Form DFW 901 shall be completed by the person importing dead birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, or amphibians, prior to or upon entry into the State of California. A copy of this completed declaration form, or a confirmation number if completed online, shall be retained with the dead fish or wildlife.
Two convenient methods for completing the form are available:
