Overview
Año Nuevo State Marine Reserve (SMR) and the adjacent Greyhound Rock State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) are located about 50 miles south of San Francisco and 20 miles north of Santa Cruz. From its northern border near the mouth of Gazos Creek to its southern border near Greyhound Rock, the alternating sandy and rocky shoreline of Año Nuevo SMR is approximately eight miles long. The SMR protects just over 11 square miles of varied ocean habitat.
Greyhound Rock SMCA covers about 12 square miles of marine habitat reaching depths greater than 200 feet. The SMCA includes around three miles of sandy beaches and rocky shores, extending from its namesake, the massive Greyhound Rock, southward to Scott Creek Beach.
Año Nuevo SMR encompasses many ecosystem types, including windswept sandy beaches, rocky intertidal zones, coastal marshes, and nearshore surfgrass beds. Its deeper waters are home to a combination of rocky reef and sandy seafloor, dropping off to depths of about 175 feet.
Greyhound Rock County Park was initially set aside by Santa Cruz County to allow access to shore fishing along Highway 1. Shore fishing is still allowed recreationally by hook-and-line within the SMCA. This area is renowned for wildlife viewing, with thousands of northern elephant seals coming ashore to mate and pup on the beach at Año Nuevo every winter and many species of seabirds using offshore rocks for resting, breeding, and nesting.
