Hello all,

I hope you are doing as well as possible. Thank you for continued dedication to students in your communities. You are close to the end of the school year and have adapted so well during these strange and challenging times.

Here are relevant updates:

1. Steelhead permits
   Due to the pandemic and closures of schools, steelhead permits are not required to be returned this year. If you returned it...thank you! Returned permits still serve as documentation for in-kind support for our funding grant. If you weren't able to turn it in, or if all the fish died. No worries. This year you are not required to return your permit in order to obtain eggs in the future.
2. Teacher workshops
   Dates have been set for teacher workshops during the 20-21 school year. You can register here Currently we are planning to offer these as we have in the past. We may have to limit registration due to room sizes. Additionally, we are exploring distance learning strategies to facilitate the teacher workshops and new ways to equip future teachers for success in CAEP. If you have any suggestion or idea please let me know.
3. Important Dates:
   These are important dates for next year to mark on your calendar. You can always reference the Region 2 CAEP calendar as well.

Chinook Salmon (Feather & Sacramento River)

• Application Period Begins: October 1, 2020
• Application Deadline: October 31, 2020
• Egg Delivery Day: Nov. 18, 2020

Chinook Salmon (Mokelumne River)

• Application Period Begins: Nov. 2, 2020
• Application Deadline: Dec 4, 2020
• Egg Delivery day: TBD

Steelhead Trout (American & Feather River)

• Application Period Begins: Jan 4, 2021
• Application Deadline:  Jan 29, 2021
• Egg Delivery Day: Feb. 17, 20

Lahontan Cutthroat

• All dates TBD

Rainbow Trout

• All dates TBD

This program is an amazing means of facilitating meaningful connections between students and these amazing fish and aquatic resources. Statewide CAEP is working to develop new resources to meet your increasing distance learning needs and exploring options for teachers to engage their students with live fish hatched cooperatively amongst the class. If you have ideas or suggestions for developing resources for teachers, adapting future teacher workshops to be facilitated online, streamlining the permit process, etc., please let me know. I'm searching for ideas and ways that we can improve.

The time to submit your 772 Request for Eggs (PDF Form) application is upon us! For teachers who obtain Chinook salmon eggs from the Feather River Hatchery, that is teachers who release their fish on the Feather or Sacramento rivers, the deadline to submit your application is October 31. Here is a 3 minute video and step by step instructions for you to successfully submit your 772 application.

How to Submit Your 772 Request for Eggs Application

Step 1: You MUST be certified to apply for fish eggs.

To become certified all you need to do is register and complete one of our upcoming Teacher Workshops. If you have previously completed a teacher workshop and participated in Fish in the Classroom in the last 3 years then you are certified and you can move onto step 2. (The only exception to this is if you broke the rules and have to re-certify—if so, you know who you are.)

Here is detailed instruction on submitting your 772 application from our CAEP coordinator, Richard Muñoz, recorded from our most recent teacher workshop.

Step 2: Get a copy of the application.

Step 3: Fill out the 772 Request for Eggs application by hand or on your computer

Step 4: Make sure it is SIGNED by you and your principal/supervisor.

Step 5: SCAN the application to your computer. Do not "snail" mail or fax. Do not email directly from a scanner.

Step 6: Save the scanned application as a PDF

Step 7: If you don't have a scanner, use an app on a phone or tablet.

iScanner worked well for iPhone or iPads. There are a few free apps ;you can try regardless of the type of phone you are using. Using an app you can convert document into a PDF and then email.

Step 8: Email your completely filled out, signed, PDF, 772 application to CAEP Staff by the deadline (October 31).

Step 9: We will send you a confirmation email if everything is done correctly.

Step 10: Get in touch with your sponsor and get ready to set up your tank!

Step 11: If any of these steps isn't done correctly...

We'll let you know what to fix and you are still responsible to turn in the corrected application before the deadline. If you have any other questions or want more detail on a step, contact CAEP Staff.

Fish Rearing Timeline

My the summer has flown by. I hope you all had a wonderful summer! As we begin a new school year and season for Fish in the Classroom. Chelsea and I wanted to briefly introduce ourselves and let you know who we are and what we do to facilitate CAEP (or Fish in the Classroom). Put a face to the email address, you know. I hope you enjoy!

New teacher workshops begin next month. Register here! Registration is low in San Joaquin county. So low it may be canceled. If you know anyone that may be interested please share this with them. We have scheduled a last minute workshop in Plumas County on Tuesday, August 13. If you are in that area and want to attend contact us.

Application for Salmon Eggs

Feather/Sacramento River Salmon egg applications will be accepted from September 1, 2019 through October 31, 2019. Applications must be emailed to r2caep@wildlife.ca.gov. Applications that are not emailed will not be accepted. Applications that come before September 1 or after October 31 will be returned.

Lastly, I rang the fishing helpline today and said, "I'm rubbish at fishing, can you help me?" The guy said, "Can you hold the line?" I said, "No." 😊

Fish Rearing Timeline

Hello! Summer is is full swing! The weather is warm (or hot perhaps). Here is a fun and simple activity for your consideration next year. Any suggestions or things you would like to share please let us know.

Gyotaku, or ‘fish – stone impression’ is a traditional Japanese art of printing fish. It was used in the mid 1800’s for fishermen to record their catches. This is a fun activity to get your students excited about raising fish in their classroom. You can use your own store bought fish or find rubber stamps online like the ones we use.

Fish Rearing Timeline

Hello teachers and ‘spawnsors’! We are kicking off our monthly (mostly and hopefully ) newsletters to keep you updated and in the loop with all things happening in our program. We want to better equip you all with useful knowledge, resources, ideas and information to enhance, enrich and engage your students with the fish in your classroom.

Just as the eggs hatching in your classroom are the start of something new...this blog is the start of something new as well. CAEP staff will do our best to make sure "conditions are right" for this newly hatched effort to survive and thrive. Similar to your classrooms the excitement, participation, and contribution of all increase the chances of success. Now that I think about this analogy. I probably should've picked something different considering the low survival rate of the anadromous fish we raise. Oh well...we'll be the one, right!
