Feeding fish, including chumming for fish while fishing, is allowed in most areas. Within marine protected areas (MPAs), however, feeding fish is generally prohibited. Certain MPAs, like the Casino Point and Lover’s Cove state marine conservation areas on Catalina Island, allow fish feeding for wildlife viewing purposes.
Note: We always recommend that you use natural foods that the fish would normally eat. If you happen to be in one of the two Catalina Island MPAs listed above, you cannot legally collect other species to feed to the fish. For example, it would be unlawful to pick up a sea urchin in Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area and use it to feed the fish.
