Upland Game Wild Bird Hunts

Upland Game Wild Bird hunts are specially managed hunting opportunities on private and public lands for upland game birds including; pheasant, chukar, quail, wild turkey and dove. Hunters must be successfully drawn through the ALDS random drawing application to participate. To apply hunters must have a valid California hunting license. Adult hunters must also purchase an Upland Game Bird Stamp to hunt upland game birds.

  • Deadline to apply to these hunts is approximately 21 days prior to the season opener for the species.
  • The application period will open approximately 51 days prior to the season opener for the species.
  • A single drawing will be conducted within 5 business days of the application deadline.
  • Successful applicants will be contacted by USPS mail once the draw has been completed.

First Half: September 1 - 15, 2017

Camp Cady Wildlife Area-Junior Required Hunt, San Bernardino County - September 2, 2017 (1002)

Camp Cady Wildlife Area - Located 20 miles east of Barstow on the Mojave River and about 5 miles north of Newberry Springs. This hunt can accommodate 75 hunters (maximum party size is 3). This hunt is a Junior Required hunt, so one party member must possess a valid Junior Hunting License. Adult hunters must have a valid hunting license and an upland game bird stamp. For: ‘Junior Required’ hunts, at least one party member must be a licensed Junior hunter. Applications for Junior Required’ Hunts that do not include a Junior hunter will be disqualified during the drawing.

Chimineas Mobility Impaired Upland Hunt, North Carrizo Plains ER, San Luis Obispo County - September 9, 2017 (9203)

Chimineas Mobility Impaired Upland Hunt, Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve, San Luis Obispo Co. - Open for dove, rabbit and a potential for Wild Pig hunting (further information will be provided to successful applicants).  This hunt will accommodate 3 Mobility Impaired hunters and their parties. All applicants must possess a valid California hunting license, and all adult hunters must possess a valid upland game bird stamp. Maximum hunt party size of 3 hunters and a total quota of 9 hunters. For: ‘Mobility Impaired' hunts, at least one party member must meet the mobility impaired requirements. A "mobility impaired hunter" is defined as any person who has been issued a Department of Motor Vehicles disabled license plate; a permanent parking placard identification card; a disabled veteran license plate; or a valid Mobility Impaired Disabled Persons Motor Vehicle Hunting License (FG form 1460). The blue plastic disabled parking placard may not be substituted for the required identification card which bears the name of the mobility impaired person. Disabled hunters must provide the registration certificate for DMV issued disabled license plates. Eligibility will be verified at the check station.

Chimineas Upland Hunt, North Carrizo Plains ER, San Luis Obispo County - September 9, 2017 (1203)

Chimineas Upland Hunt, Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve, San Luis Obispo Co. - Open to Dove, Rabbit and a potential for Wild Pig hunting (further information will be given to successful applicants). This hunts will accommodate 30 hunters. Maximum hunt party size of 3 hunters. Cosumnes River Preserve Hunt, Dillard Road Unit, Sacramento County - September 1, 2017 (1301)

Cosumnes River Preserve, Sacramento County - The Cosumnes River Preserve is located next to Highway 99 between Elk Grove and Galt. There will be one morning hunt scheduled for opening day. The hunt will be at the Dillard Road location and can accommodate 20 hunters (maximum hunt party size is 3 hunters). Los Banos Wildlife Area Hunt, Merced County - September 1, 2017 (1401)

Los Baños Hunt, Los Banos Wildlife Area, Merced Co. - This area will have three restricted areas available for hunting on opening day and will accommodate 100 hunters total (maximum party size of 3). Hunters without a reservation may sign up for a lottery that will be held the night before from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Los Baños check station. Reservations will be taken first, starting 2 hours before shoot time, with any remaining space being filled from the lottery list. Reservations will be void one hour before legal shoot time. After 12 p.m., permits will be issued by self-registration and all the hunting areas are open to general use. All applicants must possess a valid California hunting license, and all adult hunters must possess a valid upland game bird stamp. Total capacity of the area is 150 hunters. The area will remain open for birding, sightseeing, fishing, frogging, dog training, etc. However, camping will be restricted to the main parking lot Thursday, August 31. North Grasslands Wildlife Area-China Island Hunt, Merced County - September 1, 2017 (1501)

China Island Unit-North Grasslands, Merced Co. - Located between Gustine and Newman. This hunt will accommodate 40 hunters (maximum party size of 3). A permit will be required for the morning hunt. After 12 p.m. a permit will not be required and all the hunting areas will be open to free roam until the end of dove season. All permits are to be filled out and placed in the drop box provided at the entrance. Permits will be issued at the China Island Area main parking lot starting with reservations 2 hours before shoot time. Reservations will be void 1 hour before shoot time. Any spots available after reservations expire will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. There will be no lottery for additional spot. North Grasslands Wildlife Area-Salt Slough Hunt, Merced County - September 1, 2017 (1601)

Salt Slough Unit, North Grasslands, Merced/Stanislaus Co. - This hunt area will accommodate 30 hunters (maximum party size of 3). A permit will be required for the morning hunt. Hunters without a reservation may sign up for a lottery that will be held the night before from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Salt Slough check station. Reservations will be taken first, starting 2 hours before shoot time, with any remaining space being filled from the lottery list. Any available space one hour before legal shoot time will be filled with first come, first served hunters. Reservations will be void one hour before legal shoot time. San Felipe Valley Wildlife Area-Oak Grove Unit Hunt, San Diego County - September 9, 2017 (1903)

San Felipe Valley Wildlife Area-Oak Grove Unit Hunt, San Diego County - 6:00 a.m. to Noon. This location is a sub-unit of San Felipe Valley Wildlife Area, located 1.7 miles South of Cleveland National Forest Oak Grove Camp Ground on Highway 79. Traveling from San Diego the entrance is approximately 12 miles North of Warner Springs. This hunt will accommodate 26 hunters. Up to 3 hunters is the maximum party size. Hunting dogs will be allowed for this hunt. All applicants must possess a valid California hunting license, and all adult hunters must possess a valid upland game bird stamp. This hunt will accommodate 3 Mobility Impaired hunters and their parties. All applicants must possess a valid California hunting license, and all adult hunters must possess a valid upland game bird stamp. Parking lot and entrance gate are at mile marker 45 on the north side of the highway. Hunt for quail and rabbit (further information will be provided to successful applicants). This hunt will accommodate 60 hunters with a maximum hunt party size of 3 hunters . Parking lot and entrance gate are at mile marker 45 on the north side of the highway. This hunt will accommodate 10 junior hunters with a maximum hunt party size of 3 hunters . Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve, San Luis Obispo Co.  Located off Hwy 166, 45 miles east of Santa Maria and 25 miles west of New Cuyama. Parking lot and entrance gate are at mile marker 45 on the north side of the highway. This hunt will accommodate 10 junior hunters with a maximum hunt party size of 3 hunters .   • Hunters may select their top three choices.
  • Hunters may only apply once for each available hunt date for each area, duplicate entries for the same hunt area and date will be disqualified.

If applying alone or starting a party application

  1. Log on.
  2. Click "Purchase License".
  3. Click "2017 Hunting" (under menu on the left side).
  4. Scroll down to "Drawings", and click on "2017 (Bird) Hunt Drawing Application" (right side).
  5. Click  add button, which will take you to the Party Selection page.
    • If applying alone or the first person in the party to apply, click "Create New Party / Apply Alone", which will open the hunt selections.
    • Select up to 3 hunt choices, in your order of preference, and click "submit." A confirmation page will show your choices.
    • If joining an existing party, enter the party number (from party leader's receipt) and click "Join Party". A confirmation page will show your party's choices.
  6. Review the information on the confirmation page and if correct, click "Submit".
  7. Check out.

If joining an existing party

  • Additional party members may join your party at the same time by clicking on the green "Add Customer" tab at the very top of the page.
  • Click "Start"
  • Log in next party member
  • Deadline to apply to these hunts is 21 days prior to the season opener.
  • A single drawing will be conducted within 5 business days of the application deadline.
  • Successful applicants will be contacted by USPS mail once the draw has been completed.
  • Successful applicants may access hunt documents by clicking on their link in ALDS under "View my Drawing Applications".
  • Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
