Rainbow Trout are the primary fish species hatched in the classroom. Several community groups and school districts have partnered with CDFW to provide teachers with equipment, egg delivery, and support in the classroom and on release day. New teachers, or those returning to the program after a hiatus of more than three years, must attend a New Teacher Workshop before applying for eggs. Register for a New Teacher Workshop. Once trained, teachers will be paired with a sponsor in their area. If you are a returning teacher, be sure to connect with your sponsor before applying. All teachers must submit an Application to Receive Eggs (Form 772) annually before their area's deadline in order to be considered for CAEP. Applications will open for the 2025-26 school year starting in September. Region 1-East Applications will close on a rolling basis from late winter through early spring. Exact deadlines will be posted at the beginning of the school year.
