Chronic wasting disease has been detected for the first time in California’s deer and elk.

The California Fish and Game Commission acted on several issues affecting California’s natural resources at its April 17-18, meeting in San Jose. The Commission approved a major amendment with special conditions as recommended by CDFW to an experimental fishing permit related to pop-up gear testing in the Dungeness and rock crab fisheries.

California’s general spring turkey season opens statewide March 30, and runs through May 5.

CDFW invites artists to submit their original artwork to the 2024-2025 California Duck Stamp Art Contest. Submissions will be accepted May 6 through June 14.

CDFW is seeking data and public comments on a petition to list the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA).
