The California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) voted unanimously this week to close in-river salmon sport fishing in the Klamath River Basin and Central Valley rivers for the second consecutive year. As part of its annual process for adjusting seasons and bag limits, the Commission voted to: • Prohibit the take and possession of Chinook salmon in the Sacramento, American, Feather and Mokelumne rivers and their tributaries. • Prohibit the take and possession of fall-run Chinook salmon in the Klamath and Trinity rivers and their tributaries. • Adopt emergency closures of the spring Chinook salmon sport fishing seasons on the Klamath and Trinity rivers and their tributaries.

CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham has closed the recreational razor clam fishery in Humboldt County following a recommendation from state health agencies determining that consumption of razor clams in the area poses a significant threat for domoic acid exposure.

The California Fish and Game Commission acted on several issues affecting California’s natural resources at its April 17-18, meeting in San Jose. The Commission approved a major amendment with special conditions as recommended by CDFW to an experimental fishing permit related to pop-up gear testing in the Dungeness and rock crab fisheries.

CDFW is kicking off the annual trout season opener with freshly stocked lakes, and with the mild weather it’s a great time to take advantage of an annual California tradition. The 2024 opener starts Saturday, April 27, one hour before sunrise throughout many counties in the state.
