The Hoopa Valley Tribe (Tribe) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) are thrilled to announce a historic project that advances tribal Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and sustainable fishing with CDFW scientific monitoring — improving the health of salmon populations, supporting tribal practices and advancing the science that drives fishery management.

CDFW is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations interested in auctioning special big game tags for the 2027-28 hunting season. Up to 18 tags will be awarded through a competitive application process, with proceeds supporting conservation and management projects for California’s bighorn sheep, deer, elk and pronghorn populations. Applications are due by 3 p.m. Oct. 20, 2026.

As California continues to feel the impacts of a heat dome that is bringing higher than normal temperatures to large portions of the state, it’s a good time to remember that fish and wildlife — especially salmon — need cold water, too. River temperature management is critical for salmon’s survival and spawning.

The California Natural Resources Agency, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks, California Academy of Sciences and California Volunteers invite the public to join the celebration for California Biodiversity Day 2026. With more than 180 events taking place across the state from September 5-13, the nine-day celebration will offer opportunities for all to connect with nature and learn simple ways to help protect and steward the environment.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Meghan Hertel has opened the recreational razor clam fishery in Del Norte County following a recommendation from state health agencies that domoic acid no longer poses a significant threat to human health if consumed.
