Various Days — Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Access Permit Application Deadlines for Multiple Hunting Opportunities. Wild pig, deer, bear, turkey, dove and quail hunts are available through the SHARE program. A $11.75 non-refundable application fee (plus handling fees) is charged for each hunt choice. Various Days — Community Restoration Events at Ballona Wetlands, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., September 10 and 23, 303 Culver Blvd., Playa Del Rey (90293). The Bay Foundation’s Ballona Wetlands Community Restoration Project focuses on removing invasive iceplant and other non-native vegetation that can impact native California plants such as pickleweed, salt grass and alkali weed. Participants will help to remove non-native plants by hand. Parking is behind Gordon’s/Alka Water Market and the restoration site is a short walk up Culver Boulevard. Registration is required and limited to 50 participants. Physical distancing will be required and vaccination is strongly encouraged. Please plan to wear a mask if unvaccinated. Various Days — General Bear Season Opening in Select Deer Zones. General black bear season will open concurrently with the general deer hunting season in deer zones A, B, C, D, X8, X9A, X9B, X10 and X12 and extend through December 25. Please note these deer zones have varying opening season dates. General season for black bears opens in remaining deer hunting X zones on October 8 and extends through December 25. Various Days — Ecological Reserve Tours at Elkhorn Slough, 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., 1700 Elkhorn Road, Watsonville (95076). Volunteers lead walks highlighting the natural history of the Elkhorn Slough at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday. No reservation is required and individuals may join on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached. Groups of six or more should call ahead at (831) 728-2822 to reserve a tour. Various Days — Guided Wetland Tours by Reservation at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, 3207 Rutherford Road, Gridley (95948). A wildlife naturalist will lead any group, school or organization on a half-mile route through the diverse wetlands of the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. General information includes wildlife identification, behavior patterns and conservation efforts. The experience can be catered to include requested information. Each tour is limited to 20 people. 3 — Free Fishing Day. The second of two Free Fishing Days being offered by CDFW in 2022 is scheduled September 3. While all fishing regulations – such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures – remain in effect, anyone can fish without purchasing a fishing license on Free Fishing Days. California Biodiversity Day takes place on September 7 of each year, marking the anniversary of the launch of the California Biodiversity Initiative in 2018. This annual event celebrates our state’s exceptional biodiversity, while also encouraging actions to protect it. 3-11 — iNaturalist Bioblitz on the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, 3207 Rutherford Road, Gridley (95948). Join CDFW as we celebrate Biodiversity Week at the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. In late summer, the changing habitat entices migratory wildlife to this oasis of fresh food and new places to rest. Participants can help contribute to the scientific species list for Gray Lodge by using the iNaturalist website/app and cataloguing the incredible biodiversity on this property. 4 — Salt Marsh and Dunes Tour at Ballona Reserve, 10:00 a.m. to noon, 303 Culver Blvd., Playa del Rey (90293). Explore the wonder of nature in the middle of urban Los Angeles! Friends of Ballona Wetlands docents will lead participants through the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve while explaining its history and ecology. Participants can enjoy the unique native plants as they journey through different habitats and might even meet some of the local wildlife. 10 — Guided BioBlitz Scavenger Hunt at Nimbus Hatchery, 10:30 and 11:45 a.m., 2001 Nimbus Road, Rancho Cordova (95670). In honor of Biodiversity Week, Nimbus Hatchery will host an outdoor guided scavenger hunt for all ages to identify native species found along the River Discovery Trail. Our guide will help participants learn how to use the iNaturalist app to log observations. Guests should bring a mobile device with connection to access the app. There will also be an old-fashioned scavenger hunt available for those who wish to use nature guidebooks instead of a mobile device. We encourage guests to bring their own nature guidebooks to identify native species.
