Almost two dozen California deer hunt zones throughout the state will open to rifle hunting the final weeks of September.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has made a significant purchase of western Joshua tree habitat using the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Fund. The land will be co-managed by CDFW and California Native American tribes.

CDFW announces the winner of the 2026 California Duck Stamp Art Contest. The annual competition supports waterfowl conservation through stamp sales, and the art will appear on the art will appear on the 2026-2027 stamp.

CDFW is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations interested in auctioning special big game tags for the 2027-28 hunting season. Up to 18 tags will be awarded through a competitive application process, with proceeds supporting conservation and management projects for California’s bighorn sheep, deer, elk and pronghorn populations. Applications are due by 3 p.m. Oct. 20, 2026.

The California Natural Resources Agency, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks, California Academy of Sciences and California Volunteers invite the public to join the celebration for California Biodiversity Day 2026. With more than 180 events taking place across the state from September 5-13, the nine-day celebration will offer opportunities for all to connect with nature and learn simple ways to help protect and steward the environment.
