By Day Creek Ecological Reserve

Image of the By Day Creek

Description

By Day Creek is a tributary to the East Walker River. The 460-acre reserve includes approximately ¾ stream miles of the creek. It contains aquatic and riparian habitat, supporting sensitive fish species, as well as mule deer, mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, black bear, porcupine, blue grouse, mountain quail, golden eagle, various other raptors, and numerous nongame birds and mammals.

The property was acquired for the preservation of critical aquatic and riparian habitat, and was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1986. There has been rehabilitation of degraded stream habitat containing a threatened fish species. The creek is a source of broodstock for reintroductions to other identified waters required for species recovery. There has also been channel stabilization and some fish cover enhancement.
