Fishery-independent data are used in conjunction with other information to assess and manage California's offshore resources. Deep subtidal studies use remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and submarines, generally at depths of 20 to 100 meters (60 to 300 feet), to obtain data for managing and monitoring marine resources.
