There’s one last chance this year to cast your line into a California river, lake or bay without a fishing license, and that’s Saturday, Aug. 31.

As part of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Hatchery Program’s mission to support fish conservation, angling opportunities and California’s economy, CDFW stocked 1.53 million inland Chinook and Kokanee salmon fingerlings into reservoirs in 17 counties this spring.

The first of California’s two free fishing days in 2024 is coming up following the Independence Day holiday.

The California Fish and Game Commission approved white sturgeon as a candidate species for listing under the California Endangered Species Act on June 19. The Commission found sufficient scientific evidence in a petition to determine that listing may be warranted.

CDFW this week successfully completed the release of more than 2 million fall-run Chinook salmon smolts into the Klamath River.
